Toxica Tarot is for entertainment purposes only. The host is not a therapist, does not offer readings, and is legally speaking just a rando on the internet. Twenty-two archetypes, one card a week. Side effects may include cringe, compassion, and cunty self-care. Toxica Tarot is Latina made for the girls, gays, and theys.

[00:00:48] Tóxica?

Have you heard of a toxica?

She's so hot right now. Maybe you've called somebody one or oof, maybe you've been called one. Maybe you heard of it from a reggaeton song. According to social media, she's jealous, manipulative, guilt-tripping, and controlling, and Latina, and that's how she likes it. The opposite of a saint, a diabla, a toxica.

Universal, timeless, maybe even iconic? So how do we get curious about the toxica without excusing the harm? Enter the Yolanda Clause. The Yolanda Clause covers pattern recognition but not absolution, not a hall pass to harm.

Now that that's settled, let's take a deep breath. I suggest to grab yourself some herbal tea, and let's get curious.

I'm your host, Carla Corazon, and this is Toxica Tarot.

[00:01:50] Who is she? The brand of La Tóxica

But for real, who is she? Let's take a peek. There's a strip club in Las Vegas called Las Toxicas. Used to be called Cheetahs. They filmed the now iconic film Showgirls there in 1995. Same building, new name, same energy, new branding. She's all over music scene right now.

La Toxica is a brand. La Toxica is a flex. The woman in the club who isn't apologizing. We've even seen it embrace in queer spaces, and the reclamation is real. Labels, like most things, have their limitations. In Toxica Tarot, we flip the cards and take a closer look beyond the surface, a chance to move past misunderstood to seen.

Tarot has 22 archetypes older than psychology, bigger than any one tradition. The patterns are old, but the vocabulary can be ours.

[00:02:54] The Telenovela Lesson

I remember being a teen watching a novela with my tia. The good girl's in church crying under La Virgen de Guadalupe, praying for the man who is cheating on her. My tia points at the screen.

"Mira como nos quieren ver con la cara de pendeja." Look how they want to picture us as fools. Then she pointed at the villain and asked, "What is she doing that's so wrong though? Or is she just seeking independence or not interested in suffering or interested, God forbid, in starting a business?"

That was my first lesson in feminism, and it changed how I saw bad girls forever.

[00:03:39] Marianismo

Sainthood is a job that never expires, and on top of that, you've gotta keep the other women in line naturally. This pattern shows up in characters like Angela from The Office, Aunt Lydia in The Handmaid's Tale. She could be your coworker, an auntie, or even your mother-in-law. Every culture trains its enforcer.

Turns out the enforcer of choice in Latin America has a name: Marianismo. Coined in 1973 by Evelyn Stevens, the cult of female spiritual superiority, purity, motherhood, self-sacrifice. Named for Maria, the Virgin Mary, venerated throughout Latin America. Marianismo turns that image into a contract. The counterpart to machismo.

She gets the moral superiority, he gets the freedom. Sounds flattering until you read the fine print and realize you're just a hall monitor from hell. The job description is specific: suffer in silence, forgive always, stay self-sacrificing for the rest of your life, and hold up the family's morals.

There are two cards. A saint or a toxica.

Refuse the first, you get labeled the second by default.

Now the saint has a content calendar. Trad wives milking the algorithm. Coaches in your DM are offering to teach you how to be a high-value woman. Same old job, just better lighting. And then there's the reflex to shrink before they shrink you.

"No sea creída. No se cree mucho."

Confidence seen as a character defect. We don't just shrink ourselves, sometimes we humble each other. If you live long enough, you notice the self-abandonment, baby, doesn't buy you safety or even respect. If love is a humiliation ritual, I get why some women decide to deal it instead of take it.

[00:05:49] The Monster

The monster. If you wanna see what a culture is scared of, watch their horror movies. From femme fatale to final girl, the horror genre has always used women to carry its fears. These characters represent our society's secrets, anxieties, and projections. Feelings like

rejection,

desire,

affection,

aging,

ambition,

and so on and so many more.

There's so much lore around scary women too. I

remember being little and my dad telling me about the Sihuanaba.

I don't know how accurate it was,

but the story goes that she's seen late at night near roads or rivers. All you see is her long black hair from behind and a white, almost transparent dress.

She has these crazy nalgotas,

And she uses these curves to lure men into a private place near the water, where at the last moment she reveals herself as a hideous, monstrous hag. Sometimes she's described as an old witch with sagging breasts, and sometimes as having a horse head.

She's the original catfish. She drives them mad. I heard that story and thought she was kinda cool for getting rid of all these unfaithful men.

[00:07:10] Survival Strategies

Sometimes the monster doesn't stop at the myth. Sometimes it comes from home,

when accountability feels like a trap and not an

invitation. In cultures with strong power imbalances, punishment gets mislabeled as accountability.

Some of us may have been raised in households where fear was believed to be the best teacher. Fear is cheap, effective, short-term, but at the cost of everything else. Rage short circuits your nervous system and brain, which you kinda need for learning, and moralized anger makes you internalize it all.

Survival strategies install the same way you learn to tie your shoes:

without permission.

And if you go in the back of your fridge, and it looks like mine,

some of those skills may have expired.

I have a prima, both of us born in El Salvador in the '80s. Our little bodies' first stop was a violent civil war. We were just little people getting our bearings, and the adults around us doing our best to perform peace they didn't have access to.

Sometimes people survive, but nervous systems, eh, not so much.

My prima has struggled with people pleasing and me being too confrontational. both strategies have their limitations, and we've watched each other navigate the world from different angles. We're well-versed in fighting for our lives. Conflict management?

Mm, not so much. And why would we be?

I've seen how fear rewires a generation. I'm still unlearning a lot

I think about this from a Latina context and how Salvadorian women are known to be the most toxic.

I can't help but see a lot of it as survival that curdled, a response to a civil war punctuated with sexual violence, and atrocities that no longer get mentioned and only whispered.

[00:09:07] Shadow Work

What they call toxica is the armor our body builds to survive what should never have happened. The toxica isn't even just a kind of woman. She's what happens when nobody learns how to be in discomfort without exiling someone. I've heard it said that nobody hates anybody. We're just frustrated in their inability to connect.

We don't just point at her because we want to exile her. We point because we also can't stop watching. She's the prima everyone gossips about because everyone's a little obsessed with her,

and maybe you've found yourself rooting for the hot villainess in the movie, or maybe you've rewound the scene where the quiet girl finally snaps.

What we're dancing around is shadow work, and it's much older than TikTok, mi amor. The project is Toxica Tarot, 22 of us mapped through a modern Latina lens. This deck is for anyone with a shadow. The femme lens is intentional. This is a study on how we ridicule, sexualize, and vilify femme pain It's a 22 archetype system and 22 episode playlist.

Every episode pulls one card, names one pattern. You meet her in the hotline. You'll meet her in Toxica Cinema. You'll meet her in Mythical Toxicas. Not symbols you need to believe in, just patterns you've probably already lived. The Toxica isn't the enemy of this work, she's the way in. We're not doing any predictive readings, but we are pulling a couple of cards that'll leave us with some questions.

[00:10:49] Card Pull

The page card asks, "What are you still pretending you don't already know the answer to?"

The queen card,

"Whose problem did you pick up today that was never yours to carry?"

The king card,

"Where are you running the room so nobody notices you're scared to be wrong?"

Take a look at who showed up for you. Take a peek in your shadow and see which Toxica you've got running this week.

[00:11:19] Epilogue

Thank you for calling the Toxica Tarot Hotline. Next week we're meeting La Delulu.

I gotta go. She's on the other line and she's still arguing for Team Sincere. I don't know. And remember, not saints, ni toxicas.
